In Smartfrench emphasis is on comprehension before speaking, considering that with comprehension comes confidence. SmartFrench achieves this by: 1.Getting the student to understand and to be involved in the entire concept of the dialogue, rather than fragments, which is futile. 2.Using a written text of a dialogue as it is actually spoken. 3.Using color-coding to show what letters (or syllables) are pronounced and what are not. 4.Using a step-by-step approach: listening to the text first, then listening and repeating, then listening, repeating and seeing the lines, then listening, repeating and reading. 5.Teaching the common usage of the language, which had not yet been stressed or emphasized as rules. Teaching the above steps will also result in understanding dialogue from French films, which is the way French is really spoken. This method has been developed for French and the versions for the other languages are in progress.
